About Michael L. Friedman
Pattern Recognition, founded by Michael L. Fried-
man, represents the culmination of a thirty-year
journey into the nature of time and its material
expression.
A historian, designer, and scholar of horology,
Friedman established Pattern Recognition as an
extension of his lifelong pursuit to understand time
through objects that unite scientific precision with
human meaning. His career spans three decades
of scholarship, curation, collecting, and creative
direction.
After formative curatorial posts at the Willard House
& Clock Museum and the National Watch & Clock
Museum, Friedman became Head of Watches at
Christie's New York before founding MLF Horology,
an advisory practice serving collectors and institu-
tions worldwide.
He later joined Audemars Piguet as Historian and
Head of Complications, a role that reflected his
longstanding interest in both the history and future
of watchmaking. Friedman is the co-author of Aude-
mars Piguet: 20th Century Complicated Wristwatch-
es and has contributed to numerous books, articles,
films, and educational projects focused on horology
and material culture.
B-Theory Series 1 stands as the first expression of
Pattern Recognition's philosophy, bringing togeth-
er astronomy, physics, design, and craft in a single object.
The watch reflects Friedman's conviction that
timekeeping instruments can function not only as
measures of time, but also as tools for understand-
ing humanity's relationship with it.
